I know people wonder whether they need a large “estate” to do estate planning. The answer is no, you don’t. What you do need is a desire to control the disposition of your property, your well-being, your end-of-life treatment, and how you leave assets to your family. If you have a taxable estate, you want to control how much tax you pay to the extent possible in Massachusetts. If you have a young family, you want to control what would happen to them in the event of your death. Who will take care of your children? How will money be handled for them? And let’s not forget your pets! We all know that we can’t really “control” the future, but surely we can plan for foreseeable events?
